Rookies Division (PK & K) Information & Equipment Recommendation

The Rookies Division is open to PK and Kindergarten athletes who are at least 5 years old by May that season. This division focuses on introducing young players to softball in a fun, supportive environment while building basic skills and confidence.

The season typically begins with T-ball, and as players develop their skills, teams may transition to a blend of coach-pitch and T-ball.

While Mother Nature always has a say in the schedule, the season generally starts with two practices per week. As the season progresses, it shifts to one practice and one game per week.

Practices and games usually last about one hour, with a little extra time before games for warm-ups and field setup.

Equipment Information

SGSL provides each player with a team t-shirt jersey.

Each player should have their own glove. It is strongly encouraged for all players, at every age group, to have a fielder’s face mask, which helps with both safety and confidence. Coaches may restrict certain infield positions for players who do not have one. Last season, nearly 100% of athletes wore a face mask.

Each coach is provided with some equipment for teammates to share throughout the season, including bats, catcher's gear, and batting helmets. Parents are welcome to purchase equipment for their own athlete if they prefer. Good selections can be found at Amazon, Play It Again Sports, and Dick's Sporting Goods.

This division uses 10-inch “softee” softballs, which are small and softer than standard balls to help players learn and build confidence.

Many parents purchase helmets for a better fit, but all helmets must have a face cage attached—this is a USSSA requirement.

In the younger divisions, players may wear sneakers, but plastic cleats are recommended, especially as athletes move up through divisions. Metal cleats are not allowed in any division group.

Finally, please consider purchasing one or two pairs of black softball/baseball pants, which are typically worn for games.

Farm Division (1st & 2nd Grade) Information & Equipment Recommendations

The Farm Division introduces players to coach-pitched games while continuing skill development and fun.

While Mother Nature always has a say in the schedule, the season generally starts with two practices per week. As the season progresses, it shifts to one practice and one game per week.

Practices and games usually last about 1.5 hours, with a little extra time before games for warm-ups and field setup.

The season wraps up with a celebration “moving-up” game for 2nd graders, held on the same day as the Jewel Classic All-Star games for the older divisions.
